| Description: | Hopeton “Scientist” Brown came up at King Tubby’s studio in Kingston before moving through Channel One and Tuff Gong, helping define the early-1980s dub sound through a run of records that remain central to the form. Albums like Heavyweight Dub Champion, Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires and Scientist Wins the World Cup turned the mixing desk into a lead instrument: bass, echo, reverb and space pushed forward.
On 20 July, Scientist brings his live dub set to La Sotterenea, mixed in real time—heard up close.
Opening is Honeydrip, the Montréal producer, DJ and sound-system builder who's spent close to a decade working a low-end-driven sound rooted in dub, reggae and dancehall, with a debut album on Banoffee Pies and a live premiere at MUTEK behind her. A local complement to a night built around bass and sound-system culture. |
