Born in 1973 in Mulhouse (France), Jérome Decis a.k.a Kobal developped his passion for music very young. At 8 years old, his sister introduced him to Punk and New Wave which which lead to much more sonic discoveries. First, Rock and Alternative, then Hip Hop and finaly Funk and Soul which became quickly his genuine passions. At 18, Kobal got his first experience as a DJ in Mulhouse clubs spinning Funk, Soul, Rock and Alternative. In 1997, he moved to Canada to follow his intuition.
A Montrealer by adoption, Kobal found his own rhythm in the city and developped many residencies in clubs & bars such as, Blizzarts, Jello bar, Jazz’iz, Billy Kun...
Kobal’s selections were always including Jazz, African, Cuban and Indian beats. His fresh style and versatility have given him the opportunity to open in many occasions for people such as Soul legends Roy Ayers, Sharon Jones, Lee Fields, Funksters Sugarman 3, global digger Keb Darge, top freestylers like Quantic & Mr Scruff or Broken Beat hero Moonstarr... Even the Hip Hop community paid their dues to the man by requesting him to support live performances of Kool Keith and DJ Vadim. As an addition to his residencies, Kobal hosted Afrofunk with DJ Andy Williams, a monthly event that has gained him notoriety for his original music selection.
Besides keeping pushing the flow in the nightlife, Jérome contributed to the making of some nice recordings such as Don Ray’s longplayer or a Canadian Funk compilation Canadian Racer on French Follow Me / Indestructible. His own mixtapes of 7” craziness contributed also to spread the word in the streets ans among Funk critics. Jerome extended his spectrum by exploring other music of the world and especially Africa : his latest compilation was focussing on an afrofunk selection from the Caribean.
In 2004 Kobal decided to extend his skills to production and more exactly executive production. With sound engineer/DJ Ilya Pauly, he started his own 7” label Montrealfunk/Kats records. The label’s first production was the the 7’’ Pull Me Up from the Montreal band Dibondoko. As all genuine collectors, Kobal spends most of his time digging for vinyl, constantly on the look out for the rarest and grooviest tracks on the quest of the ultimate groove. This devotion makes of course his sets hard to categorize but always succeed to teach something new to his audience as much as challenging their dance steps. |
