Si elle ne faisait pas partie du wagon de la Nouvelle Vague lors de leur précédent voyage au MEG Montréal, l’ancienne voix du groupe français, Phoebe Killdeer, nous fera l’honneur de la première canadienne de son nouveau groupe Phoebe Killdeer and the Short Straws.
Au sein de sa propre formation, Phoebe compose elle-même des textes parfois sombres et torturés. Une tourmente ambiante qui fascine, portée par un timbre éraillé rappelant PJ Harvey, qui ne laisse pas indifférent un public emporté dans la part d’ombre de la radieuse australienne. Mais sur scène, avec son groupe tout comme avec la Nouvelle Vague, la petite pile électrique qu’est Phoebe se révèle être tout sauf dépressive!

Victor (chant), Vincent (guitare), Léonard (guitare et chœurs), Guillaume (batterie) et Simon (basse et chœurs) sont les 5 membres de The Popopopops, qui demeure avant tout un vrai groupe pop : une touche de rock, une touche d’électro et beaucoup de fun ! Touché par des références hétéroclites le groupe s’inspire à la volée de New Order, The Who, The Smiths, MGMT, le rock des années 70, le funk et la house music.
Fidèles à leur projet initial de faire danser, le groupe étale sa fougue au cours d’un live mélangeant les genres et emportant le public au gré de leurs fraicheur et mélodies entêtantes. Un succès fulgurant qui leur permettra de décrocher en 2009, le Prix CQFD (Ce Qu’il Faut Découvrir) du magazine les Inrockuptibles, et d’assurer les premières parties de groupes comme Diving with Andy ou Pony Pony Run Run.

The Penelope[s] se confondent en paradoxe, depuis longtemps déjà. Demandez leur depuis quand ils se connaissent, ils seront incapables de vous répondre plus précisément que « depuis toujours ». Ils ont grandi ensemble, à deux étages près, dans une ville-dortoir de la banlieue nord de Paris. Adolescents, plutôt que de se soumettre aux codes urbains virilisants, ils préfèrent emprunter les disques des Happy Mondays et des Stereolab à la médiathèque municipale. Plus tard pour les études, la capitale, an ideal for living en tête, jusqu’à se décider à tout abandonner à la musique pour consacrer leur quotidien à une nouvelle identité : The Penelopes.
Présents depuis 2005 dans les clubs parisiens, leurs performances contrastent en plein règne de l’électronique minimale et de ses représentants à laptops. Dance, rock et référencé, leur disque fait parler. Ne manquez surtout pas cette première canadienne d’un des groupes électro les plus prometteurs de la scène electro française.

Né au milieu des années 90 d’une rencontre entre Arnaud Rebotini et Ivan Smagghe, tous deux employés chez le célèbre disquaire londonien Rough Trade à Paris, les deux figures de la scène électronique lancent en 96 leur projet Black Strobe avec un E.P. resté dans les mémoire : Paris Acid City.
Dans les années 2000, Black Strobe s’impose sur la scène électronique mondiale comme fer de lance de l’electroclash, dans un style dark proche du post-punk et du son industriel qui leur est inspiré par leur culture techno Détroit et EBM des années 80. En 2007, Smagghe quitte la formation élargie entre temps à quatre membres. Après une prestation mémorable à la SAT le 31 Décembre dernier, c’est à présent au Club Soda qu’Arnaud Rebotini prendra le contrôle des manettes pour une soirée électro dans le pur esprit de Black Strobe.

Mary Hell s’est imposée en quelques années comme une des figures de la scène électro montréalaise. Mary Hell découvre le monde de la nuit montréalaise en 2002 et mettra moins de temps qu’il n’en faut pour un backward à se faire un nom aux commandes des decks montréalais, et jouer aux cotés de pointures du genre comme Guns N’ Bombs, Justin Martin, Teki Latex, Omnikrom, et d’autres …
Extravertie, la djette, aussi promoteur, est élue en 2009 une des dix meilleurs DJs montréalais par les lecteurs de Mirror. Après deux ans de bons et loyaux services pour les célèbres soirées Beat Me Up, elle lance sa propre soirée au Belmont, début 2010, Heartbreaker.

Even though she was not part of the Nouvelle Vague concert in a previous trip to the MEG Montreal Festival, the ex-singer of the band, Phoebe Killdeer, will do us the honor of the Canadian premiere of her new band Phoebe Killdeer & The Short Straws.
Phoebe composes herself sometimes dark and tortured lyrics in her latest musical project. A tormented ambiance that fascinates, carried by a scratchy voice that could be reminiscent of PJ Harvey, who does not leave indifferent audiences, taken away in the shadows of the radiant Australian. On stage with her band as well as with Nouvelle Vague, Phoebe turns out to be anything but depressing!

The Penelope[s] have been a paradox since the beginning. Ask them for how long they know each other, they will be unable to answer more precisely than always. They grew up together, two floors apart, in a boring town in the Paris northern suburbs. Teenagers, they would rather borrow Happy Mondays and stereolab records from the municipal library than submit to manly urban civil codes.
Later on, while studying in the French capital, they decided to leave it all and live their passion for music with their new identity: The Penelope[s]. Since 2005 in Parisian clubs, their performances are in contrast to the minimal electro popular at the time. Dance, rock and full of references, their music got noticed. Do not miss the Canadian premiere of one of the most promising electro band of French electronica.

Born in the mid 90s from a meeting between Ivan Smagghe and Arnaud Rebotini, both employees at the famous London record shop Rough Trade in Paris, the two electro scene figures launch in 1996 their first E.P. still engraved in our memories: Paris Acid City.
In the 2000s, Black Strobe forces their way through the world of the electro scene as a pionneer of electroclash, with a dark style close to post-punk and industrial sounds that got inspired by the 80s Detroit techno and EMB music. In 2007, Smagghe leaves the enlarged band of four. After a memorable performance at SAT on last new year's party, now it's Club Soda's turn and Arno Rebotini will take control for an electro night in the pure spirit of Black Strobe.

Mary Hell made her mark in a few years only as one of the leading DJs in the Montreal electro scene. She discovered the city’s nightlife in 2002 and took less time than it takes to be renowned enough to play decks in Montreal venues and perform next to big names as Guns N' Bombs, Justin Martin, Teki Latex, Omnikrom and many more...
Extrovert, the DJette, also promoter, was elected in 2009 one of the top ten DJs for the Montreal Mirror readers. After only two years of good services to the Beat Me Up nights, she started her own event, Hearbreaker, at Belmont in early 2010.
